The author lives in Atascocita, Texas, which is a suburb of the greater Houston area. When her late husband, Dennis, died in 2018, she moved from Midland, Texas, in order to be closer to family. She has never regretted the move and has especially enjoyed being close to her two sisters. She has two daughters and four granddaughters.
Joyce has written and published five adult fiction books and one children's book.
Her latest book is "Glory Lost," tells the story of Sadie, sixteen. She witnesses her parents' murders at the hands of Confederate Raiders. Driven by revenge, she dresses like a man and joins the Union Army as a prestigious Sharpshooter attached to Sherman's Army in his March to the Sea and till the end of the Civil War. She finds love from a very unexpected source, and runs from a man who is trying to steal her land and has vowed to either bed her or kill her.
"Mr. Grumpy Lizard Meets the Giggling Girls" is written for ages 5-8. Her Majesty, Queen Craggy Crocodile, sends Mr. Grumpy Lizard to meet the four Human cousins and eventually makes them the Official Ambassadors of Happiness. The book is written with her four granddaughters as characters. Dennis Shaughnessy, the author's husband, illustrates the book with watercolor. It is a fun read for children of all ages.
The series titled "The Pearl of the Orient," composed of three historical fiction novels, was published from 2010 through 2013. Some of the main characters are carried through from the first through the third book.
"A Healing Place" is the first novel of the series and follows a family's trials and joy through the Great American Depression in the dust bowl and the
heartache and suffering of WWII in the Philippines when their son-in-law walks the Death March. The author grew up from ages 1 - 10 in Texon, the small oil camp where the Miller family settles and finds their "healing place."
"Blessed Are the Merciful" follows an American Army soldier and Army nurse who fall in love in Manila just before the Japanese attack on December 8, 1941. They are married on the island of Corregidor and then separated for the duration of the war. The author did extensive research regarding the American men and women who fought the war on the island nations.
"The Unsurrendered," the third and last novel of the series, involves the lives of an American officer and the Filipina woman he marries. They are instrumental in gathering the 260,000 Filipino and American men and women who make up the partisan group which aided the Allied forces during the war. The group they lead is named "The Unsurrendered," which is a term used by General MacArthur when he orders some of his own men to flee capture before the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. He orders them to become "unsurrendered." The author again did extensive research to many aspects of the WWII in the Pacific, focusing on the Philippines and it's partisan groups which united to form one of the largest and most effective of the war.
"The Gryffon Master, Curse of the Lich King" a fantasy tale co-written by four amazing authors. It is an adult fantasy centering around two men, a Viking and an Arab, who suddenly find themselves thrust into a magical and terrible world of liches, trolls, and dragons. They must work together, aided by a small band of helpers who wish to rid their land from the evil which holds it captive. The two men find that they must fulfill a destiny which unfolds before them. The story is full of action and surprising twists at every turn.
