Nicholas Dames was born in Chicago and lives in New York City, where he is the Theodore Kahan Professor of Humanities at Columbia University. He writes and teaches on the history and theory of the novel form and the history of reading, and is the author of three books: Amnesiac Selves (2001), The Physiology of the Novel (2007), and The Chapter (2023). He also writes on contemporary fiction and the humanities for various outlets, including The Atlantic, The Nation, The New Yorker, and n+1. He is currently co-Editor in Chief of Public Books, an online magazine of arts and ideas.
