Professor emeritus of Modern Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London. Main research areas are Modernism, American literature, literature and technology, biology, sexology, bodily reform, media and sound; and the poetry of Thomas Hardy. Currently writing a study of modernist localism after 1926, Micromodernism.

Co-editor of the Edinburgh University Press series Edinburgh Critical Studies in Modernist Culture.
