Academic Background: Henry Sanoff graduated from New York City College of Technology in 1953, with an AAS degree in Construction Technology, attended Pratt Institute, where he where he received a Bachelor of Architecture 1957, and a Master of Architecture in 1962. Professor Sanoff came to the College of Design, NC State University in 1966 from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was an Assistant Professor from 1963.

At NC State University he was a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, award winner as Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor, and a recipient of the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal of Excellence. Professor Sanoff taught courses related to community design, social architecture, design research, design methodology, and design programming. For 40 years his graduate architecture studios were organized as a community design center providing design assistance to community groups and public agencies. Sanoff has been a visiting lecturer and speaker at more than 85 institutions and organizations in the USA and abroad including Australia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. He has been a visiting scholar at The University of London, Oxford-Brooks University, Royal College of Art, Monterrey Technical Institute, Tokyo University, Western Australia Institute of Technology, University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, University of Wellington, Royal Danish Academy of Art, University of Thessaloniki, University of Hamburg, Seoul National University, Misr University (Egypt), Yonsei University, and the Polish Institute of Architects.

Professional Background: From 1957-63, Sanoff served as architectural designer for Peter Blake, Edward D. Stone, Peter Hopf, and Harrison and Abramovitz, architects in New York City. More recently he has served as design consultant to Perkins and Will (NY), Clovis Heimsath Ar- chitects (TX), and The Adams Group (NC). For three decades, he was the USA editor of the International Journal of Design Studies, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Architecture and Planning Research and the Istanbul Technical Journal (ITU). He is listed in International Who's Who, Who's Who in the Southeast, Who's Who in Technology, American Men and Women of Science, Dictionary of International Biography and recognized as the International Man of the Year, 1992-93, from the International Biographic Center. He is currently a board member of the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities (NCEF) and ArchNet International Journal of Architectural Research.

Research: Sanoff is recognized as the principal founder of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) in 1969. He has served as Principal Investigator for numerous projects funded by US Office of Education, National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities (NCEF), De- partment of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), National Institute of Mental Health, Office of Economic Opportunity, Department of Energy, National Endowment of the Arts, Coastal Plains Regional Commission, North Carolina Arts Council, North Carolina Division of Aging, and North Carolina Division of Rural Health. His research has concentrated in the areas of social housing, children's environments, educational facilities, community arts, aging populations, and community development.

Publications: Henry Sanoff is widely published and well known for his many books—including, Community Arts Center Workbook (NEA, 2017) Democratic Design (VDM, 2010), 53 Research Papers in Social Architecture: 1965-2005; Pro- gramming and Participation in Architectural Design (Barcelona, 2005); Three Decades of Design and Community (NCSU, 2003); School Building Assessment Methods (NCEF, 2003); Schools Designed With Community Participation (NCEF, 2004) Community Participation in Design and Planning (Wiley, 2000); Creating Environments for Young Children (NEA, 1995, 2016); School Design (Wiley, 1994, 2016);Integrating Programming Evaluation and Participation in Design (Avebury, 1993, 2017); Visual Research Methods in Design (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1991, 2016); Participatory Design:Theory and Techniques (NCSU,1990); Arts Center Workbook (NCSU, 1983); Learning Environments for Children (Humanics, 1981); Design Games (Kauffman, 1978); Designing with Community Participation (McGraw Hill, 1978); and Methods of Architectural Programming (Hutchinson & Ross,1977, 2016); Design Games, (Kaufmann, 1977) several of which have been translated into Korean, Japanese, Polish, Russian and Spanish languages. He has authored over eighty-five articles and chapters in international and American journals and publications. He has also been invited as a keynote speaker at conferences in the Australia, China, Cyprus, Brazil, Egypt, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and USA,

Honors: Sanoff received the Statue of Victory, 1985 World Culture Prize for Letters, Arts, and Science; awards from Progressive Architecture Design Awards Program in 1974, 1978, & 1983; and the Award of Honor, Environmental Design Research Association, 1977. In 1991, he re- ceived the Sigma Iota Rho award for Distinguished International Service and in 1994, the NCSU Outstanding Extension Service Award. He has held many international fellowships including Uni- versity Professor, University of London, the Chettle Fellowship, University of Sydney, 1990; Nell Norris Fellowship, University of Melbourne, 1987; Lecture Fellowship, Institute of South African Architects, 1990; and the Distinguished Fulbright Award to Seoul National University, Korea, 1990, North Carolina Alumni Association honor as Distinguished Graduate Professor, 1995, North Carolina State University, Holladay Medal of Excellence, 1998, Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Achieve- ment Award, 1999, American Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Architecture Distin- guished Professor, 2000, ACSA Community Design Award, 2001, Fulbright Senior Specialists Award to Peru, 2001, the EDRA Service Award, 2003 and the EDRA Career Award, 2017.

Educational Consultant: Henry Sanoff has written one of the early books pertaining to envi- ronmental education for middle and high school students, entitled, Seeing the Environment. This work led to Sanoff's reinterpretation of the artist-in-residence program to the designer-in- residence, in a NEA grant to the North Carolina Arts Council and NC Department of Public In- struction that resulted in the publication, Asheville Environmental Workbook. Professor Sanoff's subsequent involvement in the AIA Education committee resulted in the Raleigh Workshop, a joint architect/ teacher environmental education project featured in the AIA publication, Built Envi- ronment Guidebook: How to Conduct Environmental Education Workshops for Teachers and Ar- chitects. Design Games is a collection of techniques used to sensitize people to environmental design issues. Learning Environments for Children, and Planning Outdoor Play, both published by Humanics, provides programmatic guidelines to architects and teachers in designing children's centers. For many years he has conducted workshops and training sessions for various Head Start groups in North Carolina and Washington. School Design includes case studies to show the impact of participation in the school environment on the quality of education. Creating Environ- ments for Young Children is written for early childhood educators and connects children’s devel- opmental goals to the physical environment. Community Participation Methods in Design & Plan- ning, is a collection of education, housing and small community case studies. Professor Sanoff has served as an architectural consultant in the programming and design of several children's centers, including the demonstration centers at Wake Technical Community College (NC), Greenville Technical Community College (SC), SUNY Stoneybrook (NY), and the Laguna Pueblo Child and Family Education Center (NM). He also served as consultant to the Adams Group Architects, in the design and programming of the Davidson Elementary School and University Park Arts Magnet in Charlotte, Jamestown Middle School and Millis Elementary School in Greensboro, NC, the Lyford Cay School in Nassau, Bahamas, the Minnesota High School of the Arts in Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Academies for the Deaf and Blind. Sanoff also won a Design award and a Post Occupancy Evaluation award for the Davidson School (2000), and the Millis Elementary School (2002) from the School Construction News/Design Share Awards program. Professor Sanoff also developed the program for the Centennial Campus Middle School, a joint project between North Carolina State University and Wake County Public Schools System. In 2007, he completed community arts center projects in Lumberton and Reidsville (NC) through funding from the North Carolina Arts Council.
