Joseph E. Davis is Research Professor of Sociology and Moderator of the Picturing the Human working group at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. His new book, Chemically Imbalanced: Everyday Suffering, Medication, and Our Troubled Quest for Self-Mastery, has recently been published by the University of Chicago Press. It is an exploration of our growing turn toward imagining important aspects of ourselves in neurobiological terms and our suffering as a mechanism that can be "fixed."
