Dr. Edward B. Diethrich, an internationally esteemed cardiovascular surgeon who has been practicing for over 40 years in Phoenix, Arizona, is regarded as one of the world's pioneers in guiding the evolution of modern diagnostic and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

In 1971, Dr. Diethrich founded the Arizona Heart Institute (AHI), the nation's first freestanding outpatient clinic devoted solely to the prevention, detection, and treatment of heart and blood vessel diseases. As the former Medical Director and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery for the Institute and the current Medical Director of the nonprofit organization, The Arizona Heart Foundation, Dr. Diethrich has drawn on his foresight and dynamic pioneering spirit to lead both AHI and its research foundation to levels of prominence in the international medical community.

In addition to his roles at AHI, Dr. Diethrich served as Medical Director and Chief of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Arizona Heart Hospital (AZHH). At AZHH, Dr. Diethrich performed state-of-the-art endovascular procedures using the very latest in intraluminal devices, many of which he helped design and test in clinical trials. The Translational Research Center on the AZHH campus houses facilities for researchers to develop and test new minimally invasive technologies and gene/cell therapies.

Dr. Diethrich's professional accomplishments are diverse, including the development of the sternal saw used routinely today for open chest surgery, the establishment of the nation's first outpatient cardiac catheterization laboratory at AHI, and initiation of Phoenix's first heart and heart/lung transplantation program, to name but a few. As part of his ongoing interest in patient education, Dr. Diethrich has appeared regularly on a weekly call-in television news program and occasionally on other nationwide health-care special interest programs.

A University of Michigan alumnus (BA, 1956; MD, 1960), Dr. Diethrich completed his surgical training at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor and the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before going to the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for his thoracic and cardiovascular surgery training. While at Baylor, where he was a member of the academic staff following his residency, Dr. Diethrich played a pivotal role in the development of human heart transplantation with his mentor, Dr. Michael DeBakey.

Dr. Diethrich, who is board certified in both general and thoracic surgery, is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Angiology, Cardiology, Surgery, and Chest Physicians and the International College of Angiology. He is also the founder and Chairman of the Board of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Endovascular Therapy.

Dr. Diethrich has written more than 400 scientific papers, several textbooks, and a myriad of lay publications, in addition to producing hundreds of videos and films. He has trained more than a thousand surgeons and other specialists in cardiovascular surgery and endovascular interventions. Among the innumerable honors Dr. Diethrich has received are the Frederick A. Coller Award and the presidency of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society.

Dr. Diethrich is continuing his passion for teaching and research as the Medical Director of The Arizona Heart Foundation.
