Leslie P. Gartner

Dr. Leslie P. Gartner was born in Hungary and came to the United States in December of 1956. He settled in New Jersey and received his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University. He moved to Baltimore in 1970 to teach at the Dental School of the University of Maryland. Dr. Gartner retired as a Professor of Anatomy from the Department of Biomedical Sciences where he has received numerous teaching awards. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Anatomy and also the recipient of the 2026 Henry Gray Distinguished Educator Award, the highest award for human anatomy education granted by the American Association for Anatomy. He is the author, along with Lisa M.J Lee, of "Gartner and Hiatt's Textbook of Histology, 6th Edition" (2026) which has been translated into seven languages. He also wrote "Gartner and Hiatt's Color Atlas and Text of Histology, 8th Edition with Lisa M.J. Lee" (2023). This atlas, which is used by medical schools all over the world, has been translated into twelve languages. He also coauthored "Cell Biology and Histology, BRS Board Review Series, 9th Edition "(2025) with Lisa M. J. Lee which has been translated into five languages. Dr. Gartner was the Histology consultant to "Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 28th Edition" (2006). He also coauthored "Textbook of Neuroanatomy, 3rd ed." (2025) with Maria A. Patestas and Amanda J. Meyer and "Review of Neuroanatomy for the USMLE, 3rd Edition (2026) with Maria A. Patestas. Dr. Gartner has written numerous other books for Medical and Dental students including "The Autonomic Nervous System Made Ludicrously Simple", "The Skull: A Text Atlas," "Text Atlas of the Brain Made Ludicrously Simple, "Oral Histology and Embryology, 4th ed" (2019), "Essentials of Oral Histology and Embryology, 3rd Edition" (1999) ,and coauthored "Textbook of Head and Neck Anatomy, 4th ed." (2010) with James L. Hiatt. Dr. Gartner enjoys traveling on all five continents and loves translating poetry and novels. He has translated Rainer Maria Rilke's "Duino Elegies" (2008) as well as works of a number Hungarian poets "Foreign Muses" (2026) and a famous novella by the Hungarian author Ferenc Molnar:"The Pal Street Boys" (2026).
