Susan P. Baker

Susan P. Baker is the author of fourteen mystery and suspense novels, two nonfiction books, and a collection of short works. A native of Galveston, Texas, she draws on more than two decades inside the justice system to bring depth, realism, and psychological insight to her fiction.

Before turning fully to writing, Baker served twelve years as a Texas judge, presiding over cases ranging from murder to divorce, and later spent another twelve years as a visiting judge across the state. Earlier in her career, she worked as a probation officer and practiced law, experiences that continue to shape her fascination with motive, power, and the rationales people use to justify wrongdoing.

Her stories often center on intelligent, assertive women who refuse victimhood and rely on their own judgment rather than institutions or mentors. Driven by curiosity about why people cross moral lines, Baker explores enduring tensions such as good versus evil, nature versus nurture, and power versus restraint.

Now retired from the bench, she writes with clarity, independence, and a refusal to self-censor. She lives in Cypress, Texas, and believes dark chocolate paired with raspberries qualifies as an essential writing supply.

Susan's latest novel, Death of a Jurist, the third novel in The Lady Lawyer Mysteries, will be released in November 2026.

Throughout her life, Susan has traveled the world and, besides Galveston, has lived in Japan, Mexico, Alexandria, VA, Arlington, TX, Fredericksburg, TX, and now Cypress, TX. Among her favorite destinations are England and Australia, where she enjoys visiting her cousins. She is the proud mother of two daughters and Nana to eight grandchildren.
