Robert H. Phillips

Robert H. Phillips, Ph.D., is one of America's most experienced voices in chronic illness psychology — a licensed psychologist, author of more than 40 books, and founder of the Center for Coping on Long Island, New York. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he has published with Penguin Putnam/Avery and built a body of work that has helped hundreds of thousands of people navigate the emotional, medical, and practical realities of living with chronic illness.

His book Coping with Lupus — an international bestseller now in its fourth edition — has become a foundational resource for lupus patients and the clinicians who treat them. Living Well After Diagnosis is his newest work: a coping guide for any diagnosis, offering 162 practical strategies for anyone learning to cope, adapt, and move forward after a diagnosis of chronic illness.

In addition to his writing, Dr. Phillips has delivered more than 500 lectures and workshops across the United States and abroad. He serves on the national board of directors of the Autoimmune Association and previously served in the same capacity for the Lupus Foundation of America. He is the long-time host of “Coping Conversations” — a radio show-turned-podcast featuring conversations with celebrities, physicians, psychologists, and patient advocates on resilience and life with chronic illness.

A common theme throughout his more than 40 books, Dr. Phillips blends psychological insight with compassionate, real-world strategies to help people improve the quality of their lives, no matter what problems they may face.
