Fred C. Pampel

Fred Pampel is a distinguished sociologist known for his extensive research on social demography, aging, and health disparities. He has made significant contributions to the study of socioeconomic influences on health behaviors, particularly in areas such as smoking, obesity, and mortality rates. Pampel has also explored broader demographic trends, including fertility, population aging, and gender inequality, publishing numerous articles and books that have shaped the field of social demography.

His 20 books and 100+ research articles in scholarly journals have been cited more than 14,000 times. Several books are targeted at students taking courses on Introductory Sociology, Aging, Social Theory, Public Health, and Statistical Methods.

He has held academic positions at the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado Boulder, and he was a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and the Institut national d'études démographiques in Paris.
