With over 130 history books in print, Angus is a historian of international repute. While he specialises in military and naval history, and is,a world authority on the history of piracy, he has also written on a wide range of historical topics, from the Viking Age to the two world wars. His avowed aim is to make history accessible to a wide audience.
A former Royal Naval officer, maritime archaeologist and museum curator who has worked on both sides of the Atlantic, Angus holds a Masters degree from St. Andrews University, and MAs from both Aberdeen University and UCL. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
His first major book was a biography, 'Blackbeard', published by Wileys (2006). His most recent have been published by Osprey Publishing, part of Bloomsbury. These include 'Hunt the Bismark', 'Mutiny on the Spanish Main, ' The Convoy' and 'The Pirate Menace'. In 2025 he was inducted into the International Pirate Hall of Fame, for his work on pirate history, most notably his 2024 book 'The Pirate Menace', a history of the pirates of Nassau.
His latest book, 'Lords of the Salt Road: The Norse Earls of Orkney and the Viking World' is,also published by Osprey, and comes out in mid-2026.
In addition, Angus has also written over 100 smaller books for Osprey Publishing, in their extensive range of military and naval titles.
Angus is married, and lives in an old farmhouse on the Orkney island of South Ronaldsay, just off the northernmost point of the Scottish mainland.
He was brought up in Orkney, and after spending much of his life working elsewhere, including London, Edinburgh and Key West, Florida, he decided to return to Orkney - a place he has always,regarded as his true home.
