Scott D. Butcher

Scott D. Butcher, FSMPS, CPSM is a professional services marketer, writer, and photographer based in York, Pennsylvania. His areas of specialty include design and construction marketing and business development, historic architecture, and local history books, with an emphasis on visual history and keepsake photography books.

Scott began his writing career by providing articles for professional trade publications. In the late 1990s, Scott began writing and photographing the York County, Pennsylvania visitors guide. He also helped create and launch a local relocation guide as well as a city visitors guide.

His first book, "Marketing in the Building Industry," was a compilation of marketing articles he had written. Scott's attention turned to local architecture, and he launched a virtual tour of local buildings, which he then set out to make into a book.

The first publisher he approached declined to proceed on the architectural title, but instead asked Scott to research and write a postcard book. In five weeks.

The next publisher Scott approached about the architecture book also declined; however, the conversation turned to photography, and Scott was contracted to write and photograph "York: America's Historic Crossroads." The relationship with Schiffer Publishing has been a fruitful one, with "Spooky York, Pennsylvania," "Delaware Reflections," and "Gettysburg Perspectives" all being released over a one-year period. The relationship continued with "Lancaster Reflections," "Tombstone: Relive the Gunfight at the OK Corral," and "Tucson Perspectives," with Scott currently completing "Harrisburg Reflections."

After the second rejection of Scott's architecture book, he continued to look into other publishing options. History Press was interested, and "York's Historic Architecture" finally saw the light of day. It has proven quite successful, and went into a second printing.

His most recent history-related release is "Historic Architecture of Pennsylvania," a guide to the architecture of six southcentral Pennsylvania communities, taking the reader on a written and visual tour of the architectural styles in the region from the early 18th century through the present day.

Scott is an accomplished speaker, and has given close to 200 presentations in central PA, northern MD, and around the United States, with topics related to professional services sales and marketing, architecture, and history, and he has spoken at national conferences/programs nine times. He also writes the Marketropolis blog on the Engineering News-Record website and is both a Fellow of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM).

"Reputation Design+Build," Scott's most recent release, returns his focus to the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) profession, and is based upon several years of research, including publishing several articles and giving more than a dozen presentations on the topic.

By day Scott serves as vice president and chief marketing officer for JDB Engineering and affiliate companies. He resides in York, PA with his wife, Debbie and their son, Jonathan. He holds a B.S. in Marketing from Penn State and a certificate in professional photography from the New York Institute of Photography.
