ICAN OVERVIEW

ICAN is an acronym, series of affirmations, attitude, and action-focused strategies to facilitate success of pre-college and college students as well as recent graduates and experienced candidates. The acronym identifies techniques, tools, strategies and requisite optimism related to Internships, Careers, Admissions, Networking, and more. The homonymous play on words impacts those seeking admissions graduate or professional school; those seeking to become goal articulate, and those seeking to attain internships or career related interviews then offers.

AFFIRMATIONS

I CAN … explore, cyber-sleuth, then express field, function and firm goals.

• I CAN … draft, edit, then finalize targeted resumes, cover notes, essays and other documents.

I CAN … utilize reactive and proactive five P (really ten) techniques to yield internship or post-bac career offers.

I CAN … use targeted techniques and tools to apply, be admitted to, and attend undergraduate or graduate school (or transfer to a new school) that will maximize my potential for success.

I CAN … make educated and informed decisions regarding internship, career and academic program related offers.

BURT NADLER (burton.nadler@gmail.com) was director of University of Rochester’s Career and Internship Center from 1998 through 2015. Prior, he was director of University of the Pacific’s career services; associate director of Dartmouth's career services; and assistant director, MBA placement coordinator, and career counselor at Southern Methodist University. As Director of Recruiting for a consulting firm, and Manager of College Relations for a financial services entity, he recruited undergrads and grads from the nation’s top schools. Today he counsels on-site and remotely at Niagara University and as a free-lance gratis ICAN coach. For those he teaches, coaches and counsels processes become easy to follow behavioral steps and easy to accept motivational attitudes, acronyms, and alliterations. Posting, Places, People, Program and Project (and five more P words) strategies facilitated outcomes for students and alumni. Field, Function and Firm focused answers to career goal and major queries; and finding role models, mentors and advocates who CARES (offer Consideration, Advice, Referrals, Education and Support) generate readiness for Internship, Career, Admissions and Networking success (with ICAN strategies translated into I did outcomes). Today, he is an ICAN coach (in residence on site and remotely online), bootcamp instructor, activist and apostle, as well as an educator relations volunteer for Dream Careers (www.summerinternships.com) fee-based internship program. No matter his title, for those he coaches and counsels, processes become clear behavioral steps and easy to accept motivational attitudes, acronyms and alliterations. He preaches FOCUS; Follow One Course (really ten steps) Until Successful) and targeted strategies yield articulately expressed goals. Academically, Burt graduated cum laude from University of Pennsylvania, with dual majors in Psychology and Sociology and earned a MS in Education from Stanford and MA in Psychological Services from University of Pennsylvania.

Reflected in writings, presentations, teaching, and counseling; Burt believes efforts are best undertaken with honesty and positive affect. ICAN concepts incorporate the best of career counseling, internship and career coaching, and classroom instruction to maximize the potential of students to explore, express and attain clearly articulated goals during college and beyond. Capacities to understand and voice field, function as well firm-focused goals are enhanced; with results used to establish then implement comprehensive personalized strategies to achieve successful academic, internship, and professional post-bac outcomes.
