His research interests are in Statistics and Machine Learning, with special emphasis in the modeling, control and optimization of engineering and science systems that generate complex (and not only "big") data structures (e.g., functional, surface/spatial, shape, and point cloud data), either through experiments or simple observation. He is a past recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, past editor-in-chief of the Journal of Quality Technology, and twice a Fulbright Scholar. Dr. del Castillo is author of over 100 refereed journal papers, two textbooks and co-edited two other books.
