Donald E. Carter

Donald E. Carter is an author, publisher, educator, disabled U.S. Navy veteran, and lifelong problem-solver whose books reflect a career spent exploring how people learn, build, create, and master complex subjects.

His writing spans business, technology, non-fiction, and the outdoors. He is co-author of Concurrent Engineering: The Product Development Environment for the 90’s, a work drawn from his years helping companies, universities, and engineering organizations around the world understand and implement Concurrent Engineering principles. His work in the field led to numerous professional presentations, published papers, and international teaching assignments. In 1994, he was awarded a Doctor of Science degree from Nottingham Trent University in recognition of his work in Concurrent Engineering.

Beyond writing, fly fishing, and flying, one of Carter’s longtime passions is winemaking. His interest began while working at Mentor Graphics and deepened after he and his wife moved to Paris in 1991. On weekends, they traveled to Burgundy, where Carter became fascinated with Pinot Noir and traditional French winemaking. At Domaine Comtesse de Loisy, he eventually went from visitor to hands-on student, learning vineyard work and a low-intervention approach to winemaking directly from the estate’s countess.

Years later, Carter created Villa Mariposa Vineyards near West Linn, Oregon. The vineyard grew Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, and Carter carefully amended the soil in an effort to reproduce some of the characteristics he admired in Burgundy. His 2007 Villa Mariposa Pinot Noir received a Silver Medal at the International Amateur Wine Maker Competition.

The Villa Mariposa name—Spanish for “butterfly”—carried deep family meaning. The vineyard’s distinctive wine labels featured butterflies painted by Carter’s father, Thurl Carter. The butterfly theme honored Carter’s mother, Virginia, and his brother, Thurl Jr., who was killed in Vietnam in 1968, making Villa Mariposa as much a family story as a winemaking venture.

Another cherished chapter of Carter’s life on the water began with an old wooden Acorn Skiff that he and Carole rescued and rebuilt together. Designed by renowned small-boat designer Iain Oughtred, the graceful lapstrake rowing skiff became far more than a restoration project. Carter also crafted wooden oars for the boat, and over the years he and Carole spent hundreds of hours rowing it across the alpine lakes of Central Oregon, often with fly rods aboard.

Those quiet hours on the high Cascade lakes near Bend and Sisters became some of their most memorable time together. Places such as Three Creeks Alpine Lake, high above Sisters, offered the kind of experience Carter has always valued most: clear water, trout, craftsmanship, simplicity, and the steady rhythm of wooden oars moving through a mountain lake.

Today, Carter brings the same ability to organize and simplify complex information to his Riverbound Waters™ series. Created by an angler for anglers, the series is designed for readers who want practical knowledge they can actually use. It brings together fly fishing, fly tying, fish behavior, river knowledge, techniques, equipment, and on-the-water problem-solving in an approachable format.

His philosophy is simple: complex subjects do not have to feel complicated.

That idea has guided his work throughout his life—from engineering and product development to teaching, publishing, winemaking, boat restoration, and fly fishing. Whether he is explaining the structure of a successful product-development environment, teaching the art of winemaking, restoring a wooden skiff, or showing an angler how the many pieces of fly fishing fit together, his goal is the same: to give people the knowledge, understanding, and confidence to succeed.

Carter is also a co-founder of Laurus Technology Partners and, with his wife and fellow author Carole Carter, is involved in independent publishing through Walker Carter Publishing.

He lives in Northern California, where he continues to write, publish, teach, make wine, fish, and develop new books inspired by a lifetime of technology, craftsmanship, creativity, exploration, and learning.
