Michael Scofield

Michael Scofield, a graduate of Yale in 1958, was an advertising executive for Sunset Magazine and wrote how-to-do-it books for Sunset Books (Furniture Upholstery, Basic Plumbing Illustrated, others) until—with his wife, Noreen—he launched a firm to write marketing documents for high-tech companies: IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and others. In 1992, after seven years in Silicon Valley—which saw the publication of Scofield’s The Complete Outfitting and Source Book for Bird Watching, a Birding Book Society prizewinner—the Scofields moved to Santa Fe, which they came to call their spiritual home. Ten years later, Scofield received his low-residency MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. Since then, primarily with Sunstone Press, he has published three volumes of poetry, a trilogy of novels set in Santa Fe (Acting Badly, Making Crazy, Smut Busters), and a volume of flash fiction (Sand), as well as taught small groups how to maximize the impact of whatever poems, stories, memoirs, or novels they have been working on. For two years as an adjunct at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, Scofield taught poetry skills to undergraduates and graduate students. In September of 2016, Santa Fe’s mayor, Javier Gonzales, helped Sunstone Press launch Scofield’s Dedicated Lives, a collection of in-depth interviews with thirteen of Santa Fe’s Good Samaritans. Under contract at Sunstone Press for two new novels, Bookwhacked and The Wanderers, Scofield is currently working on Love and Rage, a fictionalized memoir about his wife’s death in 2015 and his attempts to fill the gaping hole.
