Anthony King

Anthony Charles King (b. 1954) is Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of Winchester. He has excavated on many Roman sites in Britain, Italy and Gaul, notably Hayling Island temple, Meonstoke and Dinnington villas, and the early Christian church and villa at Monte Gelato. He researches in Romano-Celtic religion, ancient diet and Romano-British rural settlement, as well as Roman samian ware and coins.

Author of The Archaeology of the Roman Empire (1982), Roman Gaul and Germany (1990), British and Irish Archaeology: a bibliographical guide (1994), Excavations at the Mola di Monte Gelato. A Roman and Medieval settlement in South Etruria (1997, with T W Potter), Coins and Samian Ware (2013) and A Sacred Island. Iron Age, Roman and Saxon temples and ritual on Hayling Island (2013, with G Soffe). He has co-edited The Roman West in the Third Century (1981, with M Henig), Military and Civilian in Roman Britain (1984, with T F C Blagg), Pagan Gods and Shrines of the Roman Empire (1986, with M Henig) and Continuity and Innovation in Religion in the Roman West (2007/8, with R Haeussler).

Tony King is an editor of Hampshire Studies, and also a guide lecturer for Andante Travels, to sites in Gaul, Germany, Italy, Spain and North Africa.
