Bettina Bildhauer

Bettina Bildhauer is a Professor of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews. Her books deal with medievalism (that is, modern ideas about the Middle Ages), materiality and bodies in medieval literature and culture. Underlying much of her writing is an interest in the limits of the human, both the physical limits of individual human beings and of what counts as human. Her overall research was awarded a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award in 2020 and a Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2009.
