Charles E. McClelland

Texas native Charles E. McClelland (b. 1940) studied at Princeton, Munich and Yale universities. After completing his PhD he taught modern Central European history at the universities of Princeton, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Berlin (Humboldt). He has been a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Princeton Institute for Advanced Study and Fulbright, among others. Dr. McClelland’s major scholarly books examine primarily the role of modern higher education in shaping society, culture, the arts and the professions, especially in Central Europe. His latest contributions explain the rise of Germany’s most influential research university (Berlin) at the peak of its world leadership in science and scholarship and the development of the American medical profession (based partly on German examples) to a high point and crisis by the late 20th century. He and his author wife Sandra Sheehy divide their time among Texas, New Mexico and Europe.
