I was born in Latvia in 1943 and arrived in New Zealand in 1949. When leaving school I joined the New Zealand Forest Service and later the Forest and Range Experiment Station where I traveled to remote parts of New Zealand and encountered for the first time wilderness areas that made a lasting impact on me.
Since those first wilderness experiences I searched for ways to record and show the rest of the world the wild untamed beauty of our National Parks and Nature Reserves. I began to learn about photography and to cut a very long story short, I became a professional photographer in 1969 and graduated to full time landscape photography in 1983.
Since 1983 I have traveled more extensively and photographed in many countries but my main passion is the wilderness areas of Southern New Zealand, the Sub-Antarctic Islands and Antarctica.
