Reviews

"Miss Reed has ascended in a rare flight of fancy and written an American family that works. It is a lyrical and sweet-natured and properly eccentric novel that delivers on all of its promises."

Richard Ford

author of A Multitude of Sins and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction

"The Full Cleveland is a sharp, wry, sometimes insane portrait of a supersized Catholic clan living in the suburbs circa 1970. The writing is eagle-eyed, both indicting and forgiving, the characters rich and resonant. Terry Reed is a fresh and vivid voice on the American scene."

Richard Price

author of Samaritan and Clockers

"This engrossing, affectionate triumph of style, locale and voice... [is] a memorable, smart homage to a childhood."

Denver Post, January 7, 2005

Terry Reed's novelistic ode to polyester and adolescence, The Full Cleveland, rated: "Highbrow & Brilliant."

New York Magazine, January 10, 2005

"Hilarious and poignant by turns, this novel resonates with warmth, charm, and honesty."

Booklist, January 1 & 15, 2005 -

This delightfully zany coming-of-age novel charts the fortunes and misfortunes of the initially well-heeled Parkman family. Strung together by the wry observations of Boyce Parkman between the ages of 10 and 17, the plot itself resembles the often-scattered, seat-of-the-pants tone and tenor of family life. Residents of haughty Shaker Heights, Ohio, the five Parkman children look forward to an annual pilgrimage conducted by their stubbornly Protestant father into the heart of the city to learn firsthand how the less fortunate live. Meanwhile, back at home, Mom is busy inculcating the kids with both Catholic prayers and materialistic aspirations. Caught up in intellectual and philosophical passions, Boyce initially fails to grasp the fact that her own family's future security is far from certain. Hilarious and poignant by turns, this novel resonates with warmth, charm, and honesty. Margaret Flanagan, Booklist
