Chetan Singh

Chetan Singh who lives in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India did his schooling from Lawrence School, Sanawar and higher education at St Stephen's College, Delhi University and Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. He was a Professor of History at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, where he taught for almost thirty years. Apart from doing his doctoral research on medieval Panjab, Singh has been researching and writing on the history and culture of the western Himalaya for more than two decades. His recent publication covering a wide range of issues pertaining to Himachal Pradesh (India) is called Himalayan Histories: Economy, Polity and Religious Tradition (2018). Singh's study of the ecological history of Himachal Pradesh was published in 1998 as Natural Premises: Ecology and Peasant Life in the Western Himalaya, 1800–1950 (IIAS-OUP, Delhi). He has also edited a volume of research papers on Himalayan society and culture presented by scholars at the IIAS Shimla and published under the title Recognising Diversity: Society and Culture in the Himalaya (IIAS-OUP, Delhi, 2011). His first book was on medieval Indian history and appeared under the title of Region and Empire: Panjab in the Seventeenth Century (OUP, Delhi,1991).Several of his articles on medieval Indian history have been published in refereed international journals and edited books. Chetan Singh was Director, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, from 2013 to 2016.
