William D. Furley

William Furley was born and grew up in London. After studying Classics

at University College London (1972-5, First Class Honours) and

completing his PhD at Trinity College, Cambridge, he moved to Germany

to study and work at Tübingen University. From there he moved to

Heidelberg University, where he worked until retirement from his

position as Associate Professor of Greek in 2019. He now divides his

time between London and Heidelberg, with his wife who is from from

Tbilisi, Georgia. He has two children from a previous marriage, now

both grown up with families of their own. Apart from his profession as

a Greek scholar, with many publications to his name, he has been

active on the poetry scene, reading, writing and publishing his own

poems, which reflect life in Europe today as well as his Classical

training.
