John J. Stephan

John J. Stephan attended Harvard and the University of London. From 1970 until his retirement in 2001, he taught Japanese and Russian history at the University of Hawaii, with visiting appointments at Oxford, Waseda, Hokkaido, Stanford, Tufts, Moscow, and Khabarovsk. His books about contested borderlands and contagious illusions have been translated into Russian, Chinese, and Japanese. "Call of Ancestry" [in progress] examines American Nikkei who sought personal and professional fulfillment in the Empire of Japan.
