Thor I. Fossen

Thor I. Fossen (born in Bodø, Norway, in 1963) is a cyberneticist, a person who practices cybernetics. He was appointed professor of guidance, navigation, and control at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), at age 30. Fossen has been elected to the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (1998), the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2022), and elevated to IEEE Fellow (2016). His expertise is in robot and vehicle dynamics, autonomous and intelligent control systems, cyber security, marine craft, aircraft, inertial navigation systems (INS), state estimation, and control theory. He received an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in Marine Technology and Engineering Cybernetics, respectively from NTNU. Professor Fossen is one of the co-founders of the company Marine Cybernetics AS, which DNV acquired in 2012. He is also co-founder of ScoutDI AS (2017). He received the Automatica Prize Paper Award in 2002 and the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award in 2008.
