michael bowler was born in cahersiveen, co. kerry, ireland. he emigrated to the uk where he worked as a customs officer. he represented uk customs in the world police/fire games from 1997 to 2013 as a middle distance runner, winning gold medals in the 1500m/5000m :stockholm 1999, indianapolis 2001, adelaide 2007, vancouver 2009 and belfast 2013 where he retired with double gold in 1500m and 5000m.hence his mantra : "I'm a runner not a writer"!
nevertheless, he had his first novel 'destiny of dreams' published by poolbeg press, dublin in 1990 with a second edition in 2005.also published a collection of 10 short stories entitled the 'last season' by original writing group in 2014. included are three award winning stories namely: the' last season,' winner of the listowel writers' week competition in 1994 , adjudicator david marcus. also published in writers' week award winning short stories in 1995 and in irish sporting stories published by appletree press, belfast, both anthologies edited by david marcus.another story ' hand of time' won the irish post competition for writers' week 1993, adjudicator shane connaughton. finally, 'remembering nijinsky' was runner-up in the aib/western people short story competition at the ballina salmon festival and arts week in 1996 and also a close second in the irish post competition for listowel writers' week in 2006, adjudicator martina evans. michael bowler has now retired back in his home town of cahersiveen and lives on the iconic ring of kerry where he still runs daily and competes in fun runs over 5k .over the winter he revamped 'destiny of dreams' with a new cover for its ebook debut and published his short story collection ' the last season' which is aptly titled !
