Michael Konrad

Michael W. Konrad grew up in a Navy family, moving between East and West coast every two years but always close to the water. In the 1950’s nuclear physics was every young scientist’s dream and he majored in physics at the Caltech. However, in his last two years he discovered biology, went to UC Berkeley to get a doctorate in biophysics, and on to Harvard for research in James Watson’s laboratory. He taught biochemistry in the UCLA Chemistry Department, went back to UC Berkeley and then joined the staff of Cetus, one of the first biotechnology companies. He finally “retired” in Sausalito, a small town on the shore of San Francisco Bay, where he is able to row on the water several days a week and spend the other days looking at marine life on and off the dock. His first book, “Life on the Dock”, is a collection of several hundred of his photographs and a description of plants and animals that live on the sides of floating docks in marinas.
