Jason E. Squire is Professor Emeritus at USC School of Cinematic Arts where he taught movie business, screenwriting, case study and re-designed the Internship Program. He created and hosts “The Movie Business Podcast” on Spotify and other podcast platforms.
Squire is editor of The Movie Business Book, the primary textbook in the field. The current, Fourth Edition, was recently published in China, where he has Guest Lectured nine times, including at the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Beijing International Film Festival. The Third Edition was published by China Film Press and translated by scholars at Beijing Film Academy.
He served as Visiting Professor, Beijing Film Academy, and was honored at the 25th Anniversary of its Management Department in China. He was also named Master of Entertainment Studies, DeTao Masters Academy, Shanghai; and is an Honorary Fellow, Mallen Scholars/Practitioners Workshop in Motion Picture Studies.
Squire’s groundbreaking research helped establish “movie business” as a distinct area of academic study. After a career as a movie executive, he joined
the USC faculty.
Former students include Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios; filmmakers Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER), Doug Liman (BOURNE IDENTITY), David S. Goyer (FOUNDATION) and Eric Kripke (THE BOYS).
His scholarly work was honored at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York with a panel he curated and moderated, featuring Shari Redstone, chair, Paramount Global and president of National Amusements.
Global honors include Guest Speaker, Beijing International Film Festival; Shanghai Library; Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) in Beijing and Guangzhou; Japan Visual Industry Promotional Organization (VIPO); Tokyo University of Technology; Shanghai International Film Festival; and Film Business Academy launch, Cass Business School, City University, London.
In his industry career, Squire served as an executive at Avco Embassy, United Artists, 20th Century Fox and with producer Alberto Grimaldi (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY; FELLINI SATYRICON; GANGS OF NEW YORK). He has also written for the screen (RED HARVEST) and executive produced the CONAN THE BARBARIAN soundtrack album.
