Alok Ranjan

Mr. Alok Ranjan is a former Indian Administrative Service officer and former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. Educated from IIM Ahmedabad and St. Stephen's New Delhi, he has over three decades of experience in governance, public administration and development policy.

During his distinguished career, he worked across key areas of government including agriculture, infrastructure, industry, urban governance and social-sector programmes. Since retiring from the IAS, he has continued to engage actively with issues of public policy, leadership, institutional reform and human development.

His writing draws upon decades of administrative experience and a deep interest in making governance more responsive, inclusive and people-centred.

In Beyond GDP, Mr. Ranjan examines why economic growth alone cannot define national progress. He advocates a broader understanding of development that gives equal importance to health, education, well-being, sustainability, dignity, opportunity and happiness.

Through his books and public engagements, he seeks to contribute practical ideas for building stronger institutions and improving the quality of life of citizens.
