Kathleen Smith is a former elementary school teacher. When she retired she became an author. A Puppy for the White House was her first book. Obama inspired Kathleen to write the story by telling his girls he loved them and had ‘earned’ the puppy that would be coming to the White House with them. She went to different cities giving author talks. Kathleen has always written her books with an educator’s mindset. She writes teaching activities that go along with each book. The Presidents’Tailor is Kathleen’s second book. Her inspiration for this book came after a visit to Florida. She was given the story idea and began researching Georges de Paris. This book, she decided, needed to use poetry to tell the story. Because she was writing about real-life events it was important for her to keep it real. It has received the Moonbeam Gold Medal Children’s Book Award for Poetry. She also received the Gold Literary Titan Award.
Kathleen has chosen the Indy-writer path. She wanted to choose her artist to encapsulate her vision without restrictions or changes.
