Gary Wasserman has fashioned a career in teaching, political consulting and writing. He taught American and international politics courses for 8 years as Professor of Government at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Doha, Qatar. Last year he was appointed a Senior Advisor for online programs at Georgetown University. He was a Visiting Professor at The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies teaching graduate students in Nanjing, China. Gary received his Ph.D with Distinction at Columbia University. A Fulbright Scholar, he studied at St. Antony's College, Oxford University, Nairobi University, and Georgetown's School of Foreign Service. His thesis, Politics of Decolonization, was published by Cambridge University Press. He also taught at Columbia University and Medgar Evers College, CUNY.
In his 20 year career as a Washington analyst and consultant Gary managed communications for international and domestic clients. As a Senior Vice President of the public affairs firm Bozell Sawyer Miller, he created and organized state and local campaigns, a role he had also filled as a partner in a grassroots Washington firm. His public service includes: National Issues Coordinator for a presidential campaign; legislative assistant in the House of Representatives, and Special Assistant for Evaluation to the Administrator of USAID. Before returning to teaching he created Banyan Advisors, a non-profit lobbying firm for the poor.
A widely published author and media commentator, Gary has written for Al Jazeera, The Washington Post, and Foreign Policy. He created the well-received satire magazine, Mole, and has written humor for a number of national publications. He published Politics in Action, a book of case studies on modern U.S. politics for Houghton Mifflin (2012), and revised his popular text for Pearson, The Basics of American Politics, (2015) for its 15th edition. He recently wrote a book of reflections, The Doha Experiment, (Skyhorse) on his teaching in Doha and the future of liberal education in the Middle East.
