Jonathan Baron

Jonathan Baron is a retired Professor of Psychology (retired) at the University of Pennsylvania.

His research is mainly about intuitions and judgment biases that impede maximization of utility (good) by democratic government. These include parochialism, moralistic values, and absolute moral rules. He is also interested in experimentation and data analysis.

Baron is the author, co-author, or co-editor of several books, which include some about applied philosophy, as well as psychology. Thinking and Deciding (5th edition, 2024), is a widely used textbook for advanced undergraduates and beyond. He has published over 200 papers as journal articles or book chapters. He founded the journal Judgment and Decision Making in 2006.

His latest book is "Effective citizenship: How we can make the world better and why we don't" (Oxford University Press).

He holds a BA from Harvard (1966) and a PhD from Michigan (1970), and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Psychological Science, the Psychonomic Society, and the Society of Experimental Psychologists. He was president of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making in 2007.
