I'm an antebellum U.S. historian interested in the politics of the decades before the Civil War, particularly how slavery came to eclipse all other issues in the minds of the nation's politicians and voters. My new book focuses intensely on the pivotal election of 1860, where Abraham Lincoln seemingly came out of nowhere to capture the White House during the nation's deepest sectional crisis.
