Karl Galinsky

Karl Galinsky was born in Strasbourg, Alsace in 1942. He finished high school in Germany and then moved to the U.S., where he went to Bowdoin College and got his Ph.D. in Classics at Princeton in 1966. At that time, he was liable for military service in the armies of France, Germany, and the U.S. and therefore decided to become a Roman emperor. A full professor at the University of Texas since age 30, he has received many awards for his research (incl. from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Max-Planck Society) and for his teaching (incl. appointment as University Distinguished Teaching Professor since 1999). His interests and publications (incl. 10 books) range over many aspects of Roman civilization, with a special interest in the age of Augustus, and he regularly teaches large introductory courses in Greek and Roman civilization. In addition he has led study tours in all parts of the Mediterranean for various organizations.
