Timothy M. O'Brien

Timothy O’Brien is a software architect, author, and longtime observer of how technology changes the way people work. He has authored and contributed to several books published by O’Reilly and has been active in open source communities throughout his career. He maintains a blog on Medium, where he writes about artificial intelligence, software architecture, open source, and the changing economics of code. His essays are often republished by O’Reilly Radar.

He is the author of The Condition Set and the creator of The Slop Codex, an illustrated field-guide series that uses memorable characters and monsters to expose the anti-patterns of AI-assisted development. His work on The Orchestrator explores the emerging human role at the center of increasingly autonomous systems.

Across fiction, technical writing, and organizational analysis, O’Brien returns to the same question: what happens when powerful systems move faster than the people responsible for directing them?

His upcoming book, Into Alignment, examines what it takes to bring people, incentives, technology, and judgment back into meaningful agreement.
