Whitham D. Reeve

I was a registered professional engineer in the states of Alaska, Hawaii and Washington, Yukon Territory, and Alberta. Over the years I have written numerous books and articles on the practical aspects of telecommunications engineering.

I was born in Anchorage, Alaska USA and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Master of Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with an emphasis on advanced communications engineering and engineering management. I am a Charter and Senior member of National Association of Radio and Telecommunications Engineers (NARTE) and Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and also have belonged to other professional organizations such as American Consulting Engineers Council.

In 1978 I founded Reeve Engineers, a consulting engineering firm that provides engineering services to wireline and wireless telecommunications service providers and telecommunications equipment manufacturers, Over the years I served as the engineer of record for several rural Alaskan local telecommunications service providers, designing, installing and testing telecommunication systems and components of all types. I worked on hundreds of diverse projects including deployment of Signaling System No. 7, Basic Exchange Telecommunications Radio Service (BETRS), cellular and point-to-point microwave radio systems, optical fiber transmission and SONET ring networks, reliable networks for air traffic control, earth grounding system design, and the effects of nuclear blasts on telecommunication and power systems.

I found as a practicing engineer that there existed little practical published material on telecommunications engineering that would be useful to engineers outside the Bell System and AT&T. I decided to write about what I had learned in the field. Also, during the 1990s and 2000s I was the editor of the IEEE Press Telecommunications Handbook Series and a former member of IEEE Press editorial board.
