David Boucher

David Boucher is Professor of Political Philosophy and International Realtions at Cardiff University. He is also Visting Distinguished professor of Politics at University of Johannesburg (2016). He has published on a wide variety of subjects, including international relations; colonisation and decolonisation; history of political thought; African political thought; British Idealism; the political philosophy of R. G. Collingwood; and, cultural studies. He has held visiting fellowships in Oxford, the University of Johannesburg, Canterbury University, New Zealand, The Sun Yat Sen University, Taiwan; and the Australian National University. He has been the Chairman of the R. G. Collingwood Society, and Director of the Collingwood and British Idealism Centre since 1993. He has been Head of School, School European Languages, Translation and Politics; The Dean of Lifelong Learning; inaugural Director of the Graduate School in Humanities and Deputy Pro-V-C for Staffing and Diversity, Cardiff University. His most recent books are Theories of International Relations from Thucydides the Present (1998), British Idealism and Political Theory (with Andrew Vincent, 2001), The Limits of Ethics in International Relations (2009), British Idealism: A Guide for the Perplexed (2011 with Andrew Vincent), and Appropriating Hobbes (2018). He has written, with Lucy Boucher, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen: Deaths and Entrances (2021). In addition, he is the author of Dylan an Cohen: Poets of Rock and Roll (2004), and the editor of The Political Art of Bob Dylan (with Gary Browning, 2004 and 2009). He is currently working on aspects of colonialism and decolonisation. his most recent books are Language, Culture and Decolonisation (Humanities Research Council Press, Cape Town); Decolonization: Evolution and Revolution (2023 with Ayesha Omar); and Reappraising the LIfe and Legacy of Jan C Smuts (2024, with Bongani Ngqulunga) He is a Fellow of The Learned Society of Wales, and was Vice President during the period 2017-2020; a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a Felow of the Academy of Social Sciences. His books have been translated into many languages, including Polish, Serbian, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic and Chinese.
