Michael Cowan

My expertise is in German culture and media of the early twentieth century. But I have always had wide-ranging interests, and my work is also informed by a passion for larger questions and broader trajectories stretching from the premodern world to the digital era. In all of my books, I have sought to understand some of the ideas, practices and material conditions that helped to shape European modernity, driven by a conviction that the most illuminating answers often lie in unexpected places and connections.
