Joseph Shaules

Joseph Shaules (PhD) has worked in intercultural education in Japan, Mexico and Europe for more than 25 years. He is a Specially Appointed Professor at the Keio University Global Interdisciplinary Course. He is the director of the Japan Intercultural Institute. He teaches in the Tsuda University Graduate Program in TESOL. He teaches intercultural communication at the International Center of Keio University, and also hosts the Deep Culture Podcast. He holds a BA degree in foreign languages from Portland State University, an MA in teaching from the School for International Training, Brattelboro, Vermont, and a PhD from the University of Southampton, where he carried out research on intercultural adaptation. His academic interests include intercultural adjustment, deep culture, culture and cognition, the psychology of language and culture learning, and learning theory. He has lived and worked abroad (Mexico, Japan, France) for more than 25 years and is proficient in English, Japanese, French and Spanish. Currently, he lives in Tokyo.
