John J. Murphy

Dr. John Murphy is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus and internationally recognized practitioner, author, and trainer of strengths-based/solution-focused brief therapy practices with young people, adults, families, and others. He has worked as a high school teacher, school psychologist, psychotherapist, professor, and consultant/trainer to agencies around the world. His books have been translated into multiple languages, the newest of which are Solution-Focused Therapy (2024, American Psychological Association) and the award-winning Solution-Focused Counseling in Schools, 4th edition (2023, American Counseling Association). Dr. Murphy’s work is featured in two DVD training series (Child Therapy with the Experts and APA’s Psychotherapy in Practice), psychotherapy textbooks, and the NY Times bestsellers Switch and Reset. His clinical, scholarly, and advocacy work has also been recognized through numerous awards that include NASP School Psychologist of the Year Finalist, ASCA Writer of the Year, ARMEA Advocate of the Year, and more. Dr. Murphy teaches, consults, and trains practitioners for professional organizations, mental health agencies, universities, and school systems throughout the world. He is a highly sought speaker who has presented keynotes and workshops for professional and public audiences in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, and other countries.
