James A. Crawford (1954- ) was born in Iowa and moved to southern California for graduate school on a Hughes Aircraft fellowship right after college. Although he studied quantum electronics while at USC, he became the head of the frequency sources group at Hughes Ground Systems Group where much of the activity was centered on phase-locked systems. He has previously been a member of the technical staff at multiple aerospace firms like Hughes, TRW, and Linkabit. Since the 1990s, he has primarily been a consultant to industry, but has also been directly involved with several start-up companies. Fundamentally having a math/physics bent, his present-day interests also include detailed design and fabrication of precision telescope optical systems and observational astrodynamics. He is also an avid photographer. He and his wife have 4 children and are partial to golden retrievers. Visit his website at www.am1.us
