William J. Carney

William J. Carney, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law, teaches Business Associations, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Finance and Securities Regulation. Professor Carney has served as visiting professor at New York University, the University of Virginia, the University of Michigan, the University of Antwerp, Belgium, the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, and at the Central European University. He has presented papers at meetings in Italy, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and Denmark, as well as at various meetings in the U.S. He is the author of a popular casebook on Mergers and Acquisitions, now in its second edition, a casebook on Corporate Finance, a treatise on Mergers and Acquisitions, two other books on corporate and securities law subjects as well as over 50 articles and book chapters. Several of his articles have been recognized as among the best articles in corporate law in the year of publication. Professor Carney began his career in Denver, where he became a partner at Holland & Hart, before beginning his teaching career at the University of Wyoming. He has maintained his connection with the practicing bar by serving as Chair of the Corporate Code Revision Committee of the State Bar of Georgia, and Reporter for a bar committee that drafted and proposed the current Georgia Business Corporation Code. He serves on the board of Pharmasset, Inc., a publicly traded biotechnology company, where he chairs the nomination and governance committee.
