Mickey Leland Mattox

Mickey L. Mattox teaches historical theology at Marquette University, where he specializes in studies of the great Reformer Martin Luther. His PhD Degree is from Duke University, where he studied with David Steinmetz. Previous to Marquette, he was Research Professor in the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France, where he worked as a theological consultant for the Lutheran ecumenical dialogues. In 2005 Mattox was received into full ecclesiastical communion in the Roman Catholic Church.

His book Changing Churches (Eerdmans, 2012) offers an apologia for his "conversion," but with gratitude for the Lutheran tradition that nurtured his faith. An Exposition of Genesis (Marquette, 2013) offers the Latin text with translation of Johannes Oecolampadius's Exposition of Genesis 1-3. Defender of the Holy Martriarchs provides an in-depth analysis of the female figures in the book of Genesis, as read by Martin Luther.

Most recently, he co-edited Luther at Leipzig (Brill, 2019) with Richard J. Serina and Jonathan Mumme. This book offers twelve chapters examining the history and theology of the Leipzig Debate (1519), a major event which pitted Martin Luther against Johann Eck.
