My family moved from Lorain, Ohio to Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1950, when I was seven. We were all storytellers and readers -- we had to be, because television didn't come to our house until 1959. I was lucky enough to attend a rural school with about ten kids in each grade and three grades in each classroom. When my grade was being taught, I got individual attention, and the rest of the time I got a preview of coming attractions, a review of the previous year, or both. We learned by reading and writing, which was a good system; they should try it again.

After high school I went to the University of Wisconsin, put in four years in the Navy, went back to the UW, got married, and finally emerged with degrees in natural resource management and journalism. More luck: I managed to land a job as a public information officer with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which was the best such agency in the country, and will continue to be, if the politicians leave it alone. During my 30 years at the DNR, I wrote about a million press releases and learned to be succinct. When I retired I slept late and goofed off for a while, and then started writing again. The result was "Sweet and Sour Pie", and I have just finished another book, fiction this time, about life in Door County, Wisconsin. Like "Pie", it is lighthearted; the world has angst enough as it is. Enso?
