Thomas P. Simon

Thomas P. Simon (1959- ) was born in southeastern Michigan. He earned academic degrees in Biology from The University of Michigan (BS), University of Wisconsin (MS), and the University of Illinois (PhD). His training in ichthyology was at the University of Michigan under Karl F. Lagler. He is a third generation academic descendent of David Starr Jordan tracing his lineage through Karl F. Lagler and Carl Hubbs. While at the University of Illinois he studied under Lawrence M. Page. For 25 years he was a Federal government scientist employed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service. He was recognized as a National expert in biological assessment and criteria and environmental indicators. His research program includes applied research on the ecology and conservation of aquatic habitats with emphasis on North American freshwater fish and crayfish. He is a coauthor of the "Reproductive Biology and Early Life History of Fishes in the Ohio River Drainage" series and has published other books on topics including ecological health, biological indicators, Great Lakes wetland health, Fishes of Indiana, risk assessment, and crayfish conservation. His research emphasis is on solving practical problems in water pollution and resource management. His studies involve applied research focused on anthropogenically modified habitats affected by landscape change, contaminants, and watershed stressors. He is a a decorated medal recipient, life member of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and American Fisheries Society, Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Science, certified as a fisheries research biologist by the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists, former Director of the Indiana Biological Survey, and recognized as outstanding Professor at The Ohio State University, FT Stone Laboratory (2011). He currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife Beth and children.
