David Chapman

I am Associate Professor and Reader in Japanese at the University of Queensland. I have previously been affiliated with Curtin University, University of South Australia, Central Queensland University, Waseda University and the National Language Research Institute of Japan. My interests in Japan are wide ranging with some captured in the books and academic papers I have written. In particular, I have covered issues in citizenship, nationality, identification and how this impacts upon individuals and communities. I am also interested in how Japanese language and culture are taught and the pedagogical practices that can improve this important task. When not researching in Japan or visiting friends there I like to hike the various ancient roads scattered all over Japan. Most recently the Nakasendo from Kyoto to Tokyo.
