Gerry Stahl

Gerry Stahl is an academic researcher in the field of CSCL (Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning). He published books on CSCL research, theory, methodology, practice: “Group Cognition: Computer Support for Building Collaborative Knowledge” (2006, MIT Press), “Studying Virtual Math Teams” (2009, Springer), "Translating Euclid" (2013, Morgan & Claypool), "Constructing Dynamic Triangles Together" (2015, Cambridge U.). He launched and edited the “International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning.”

Gerry Stahl earned his BS in math and science at MIT. He earned a PhD in continental philosophy and social theory at Northwestern University, conducting his research at the Universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt. He later earned a PhD in computer science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught at the College of Information Science & Technology at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he is now Professor Emeritus.

His writings weave together perspectives and insights from his different backgrounds and interests as a philosopher, scientist, teacher, designer and artist. He is now retired on Cape Cod in a house he designed, where he does sculpture using local woods and supports land preservation.
