Jorge Iber

Jorge Iber was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida. He taught in the public schools of Miami-Dade County for five years before pursuing a PhD at the University of Utah. He currently serves as Associate Dean in the Student Division of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

His initial academic focus was on Mexican American history, but over the past 20 years he shifted his research interests to examine the story of Mexican Americans/Latinos and their participation/role in the history of US sports.

He is the author/co-author/editor/co-editor of fourteen books and numerous scholarly and encyclopedic articles, as well as more than 50 published scholarly book reviews. Recent projects include a full-length biography of Mexican American former MLB pitcher, Mike Torrez (he of the pitch to Bucky Dent in the 1978 playoff game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees); an anthology covering key moments in the history of the Pittsburgh Pirates (through SABR); a co-authored manuscript on Latinos in American football (at all levels) for McFarland; another anthology on Latinos and sport (through Texas Tech University Press); a junior-high level biography on Mariano Rivera co-authored with his (school-teacher) wife, Raquel; and now a full-length biography of Texas Tech great, Gabriel Rivera for Texas Tech University Press (due out in July of 2021).

Current projects include the following: 1) An anthology on Spanish Language Major League broadcasters (with Anthony Salazar of the University of Washington); 2) A family history of the Sanchez clan of Cheyenne, Wyoming; a family with three generations of champion collegiate wrestlers; and 3) A junior-high level biography of Tony Romo, again co-authored with Raquel Iber.
