Susan Stefan

Susan Stefan is a lawyer, law professor and advocate for people in emotional crisis, people who are institutionalized, and people who are diagnosed with psychiatric disabilities. She worked at the Mental Health Law Project (now the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law) and the Center for Public Representation, and was a law professor at the University of Miami School of Law. She has served as an expert consultant to the President's New Freedom Commission, Amnesty International, and the National Academy of Science Institute of Medicine. She has been an expert witness in federal court cases concerning the fairness of consent decrees settling class actions on behalf of institutionalized people. She has written dozens of articles about the rights of people with psychiatric disabilities. In her youth she both played the harp and was on her university's rife team, but she has now regressed to being an artisanal ice cream connoisseur.

She lives with her husband and dog in Rutland, Massachusetts.
