In addition to an MFA in screenwriting from UCLA, Jim holds an MA in journalism from the University of Missouri. He earned his undergraduate degree from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where he later served on staff as Director of Information Services and Publications. After selling everything he owned that didn't fit into his Econoline van, Jim left Oklahoma for Los Angeles to break into the film business. Within a year, he was accepted into UCLA's graduate screenwriting program. Jim optioned his first screenplay the year he graduated and officially entered the Hollywood version of "Chutes and Ladders." Since 2000 he has served as a visiting assistant professor/lecturer at UCLA's Department of Film, Television and Digital Media. He also teaches in the university's Professional Screenwriting Program.
